Elle Smith always made sure to preach to her friends about safe sex. So how could this be happening to her? Elle sat there in the auditorium of the school with her graduating class. The day she was so excited about a few weeks earlier was now the farthest thing from her mind. She watched as her classmates walked across the stage and received their degrees. They all looked so happy, most of them excited to be out of a school officially. Lost in her own thoughts Elle didn’t notice her row standing up until the guy next to her tapped her shoulder. Her cheeks flushed and she got up quickly following the person in front of her.

Name after name she waited until finally she handed the person her name card and as her name was called she walked across the stage, took her degree, shook the person’s hand, and forced a smile. After her picture was snapped she quickly followed the girl in front of her and walked back to her seat.

The day ended about as quickly as it started. Elle found herself sitting on her bed, staring at the pregnancy test she had taken earlier that morning, the positive pregnancy test. She tried to shake the thoughts from her head and got off her bed. Maybe keeping herself busy would help and she had a lot of packing to do.

Nothing seemed to be going right for Elle over the last couple of months. The last few classes she had to take seemed to be going extremely slow and the homework just seemed to pile up no matter how much she did. Secondly, the guy that she thought would be her soul mate for the rest of her life broke up with her only three days before graduation, and now she was pregnant with his child. Not to mention she would start interning at the Memorial Hospital in two weeks.

Deciding to push the pregnancy out of her head she just continued to pack.

About a month later her interning was taking up most of her time, learning about this and that, doing paper work, cleaning, filing, and just the small jobs that no one really wanted to do. Instead of starting a feud with one of her co-workers her biggest nemesis was a poster hanging in the hallway. Already she had, had to pick it up off the floor three times and put it back up on the wall. So when she walked off the elevator and turned the corner to walk down the hall, she wasn’t surprised to see it lying there on the floor. With her emotions running wild and her being pregnant her nerves were at end. Finally she picked it up and rolled it up, sticking it next to the computer desk. If someone wanted to mess with it, they could.

She made her way to Dr. Williams’s office to see what her first task was today. She gathered her itinerary and headed to room 304. Knocking softly and lightly she entered while looking over the woman’s chart. When she looked up she found a very pregnant girl that looked about her age and a boy that had a hand on her stomach, caressing and holding her close. The lump that she couldn’t seem to swallow in her throat grew bigger. Smiling, something she once loved to do didn’t seem like an easy task.

Since finding out about her pregnancy she hadn’t told anyone. After introducing herself and checking her vitals she quickly made her way out of the room. Taking a deep breath to try and gather herself, she looked down at her next task, only to find the paper blurred and her eyes stinging. She had promised herself that she wouldn’t cry and that crying wasn’t worth it. Her feet moved her towards a vacant hall and she slowly slid down the wall, holding her folders close. She couldn’t hold the tears as they started spilling out of her eyes.

There wasn’t a way to hide from the pregnancy. It was happening and Elle couldn’t stop it. Elle wasn’t scared of being pregnant; she just didn’t want to have to explain why the little one didn’t have a daddy.

Already she could hear her mother yelling at her for ruining her life, yelling at her for getting pregnant at a young age. Elle thought that maybe her mother, of all people, would understand, since she had been in the same predicament. Elle didn’t even want to begin thinking about how much crap she would get if her pregnancy got outed to her family or friends.

She set her folders down on the floor next to her and leaned her head back against the wall. Right now she would give anything to be at home, snuggling with Mr. Bear, the only person, or stuffed animal in this case, that she could tell everything to. Mr. Bear has been through almost every good and bad time with her since she was two. And honestly, life without Mr. Bear wouldn’t be the same.

Elle realized that even though she had something like Mr. Bear to make her feel at home, she was still an adult and had to take responsibility, not only for herself, but for her baby too.

She dug her cell phone out of the pocket or her scrubs and dialed the number that was so familiar to her. Her heart pounded harder with every ring until finally he answered.

“Hello?” His voice brought back so many memories.

“Hey Zac, it’s Elle, we need to talk.”

I really liked the twist on this story. I like the open ending because it leaves you wondering what Elle said to Zac, how he reacted and what happened after that. I also liked that the relationship with Zac was already over, and this was more about Elle dealing with (or not dealing, I guess I should say) with what’s happening by herself before telling Zac.

I’ve been through an unexpected pregnancy, and I think this story captures the dazed disbelief you feel, along with fear of the future, the sense of the inevitable, and the wish that this could be happening under more positive circumstances. It’s a lot to communicate in a short piece, but you really handled it well.

Aww! I liked it Audrey! I agree with Brittney when she said she liked the open ending… it leaves it to the reader’s imagination… will Zac be a jerk or will he be helpful? I really enjoyed it.

I really liked this story. You did the theme justice very concisely and I found myself feeling for her a great deal. Nice job!

I really love the open ending! I like using my imagination sometimes… because I always go for happy endings and this way, it can be for me. :)

I like how this story was about HER and not HIM. And it only had a mention of him at the end. The ending was great. It leaves unanswered questions, but not so many that it makes the story feel unfinished.

I agree with everyone else. I love the way you ended it. It keeps the reader guessing as to how Zac took the news. I like how you kinda guess and form your own opinion on it. :)
